Jo Wheeler
I’m a contemporary Australian artist working primarily in oil on canvas and linen, inspired by the shifting moods, colours and textures of the Australian landscape.
I’m particularly drawn to the contrast between the translucency and movement of water and the vast, mineral landscapes of the Australian interior. These different environments continually influence the way I see colour, light and texture, and often find their way into my paintings in unexpected ways.
I work intuitively, building my paintings through layers of colour, glazing and texture. My work sits somewhere between representation and abstraction, and I’m fascinated with how light, distance, water, weather and time leave their marks on a landscape. For me, painting is less about recreating a particular place and more about capturing how a place feels — the atmosphere, the light and the sense of space that stays with you.
I have exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Melbourne and have been selected as a finalist in the Paddington Art Prize. My work Night Swimming was a winner in the 2026 Art to Hearts competition and was published in Art to Hearts, Volume 11 in New York. My paintings are held in private collections and have also featured on wine labels and album artwork.
